Schizophrenia

Friday night was a wonderfully schizophrenic evening, beginning with Ken Layne and the Corvids at the Derby. Apparently they were having monitor problems on stage, but they weathered the difficulties with ease, at least as far as we the audience could tell. They sounded great, and played a lovely Willy Nelson cover to boot.

Am I wrong in feeling like the band seemed even more comfortable in its skin, technical problems notwithstanding? There was an artful, subtle easing of the songs' blueprints as etched in my memory from the recordings; a differet note here, a modified phrasing there...cool to hear songs performed by a band of living, breathing people, not some over-rehearsed spectacle.

Can't wait for that album!

From there it was all brief goodbyes and then off to Boarder's for Tejada's set, which of course is nothing like the Corvids. From alt-country/roots rock/whatever to glitch-house/techno/whatever: mobility!

The highlight was catching up with my friend Tom from Engurland and Lynn, Michelle, and continuing to goof off with Ryan, who braved the carnivalesque environs of a house club. Our mutual friends are still in shock that he went.

We mostly sat on the couch in the faux VIP area on the patio as JT played...and just acted like geeks. Very fun. There was something cleansing about the night. Somehow, my shirt got unbuttoned, pictures were taken, trouble was caused, and JT played some wonderfully good music.

It was also pretty neat to hear one of my newer tunes in the mix. When it comes to house/techno/whatever, I still get that kind of quiet, raw thrill when I hear one of my tracks out, well-mixed. It's nothing earth-shattering, and is even, on some other hand, almost embarrassing, but it's also neat. Of course Michelle had to make fun of me!

At 2, it ended, the promoter remembered me from playing there a couple of months ago and invited me back to play techno or house, so, um, yeah, maybe you can come hear me play not dnb!

I came home feeling very fine.

Happy start to the weekend.
