English, and its corruption

There's probably some kind of irony in the fact that it was the same English lit departments that taught me how to decipher and write (as is evident by this blog) stuff like this that also taught me that one of the great hallmarks of (post!)modern bad writing and speech is the verbification of nouns. "Essentialize?" "Minoritize?" For that matter, the old chestnut "prioritize?"

Amazing how those departments can be so right, and yet so horribly wrong. Maybe, on occasion, they ought to listen to themselves...

I struggle with my legacy.
