Da Vinci: medieval?

My turn to weigh in on the BBC getting the facts wrong. In a story on an upcoming ABC news special on whether or not Jesus had a wife, Leonardo Da Vinci is referred to as a "medieval painter and inventor."

Da Vinci was most certainly not a medieval painter and inventor. He was a High Renaissance painter and inventor, reaching his peak as an artist at the close of the 15th century and through the beginning of the 16th century. If we agree that the Italian Renaissance began with Giotto's mature work (ca. 1290), then that's a full two hundred years of distance from medieval Italy, with a legion of brilliant artists and scientists between them. You'd think the BBC could have gotten it right; after all, we don't call Da Vinci a "Medieval Man."
